Jon Schofield is a seasoned litigator with a broad base of litigation experience. He has represented commercial parties in business, contract, insurance, employment, intellectual property, real-estate, bankruptcy, and multi-level marketing disputes. He also has spent a significant amount of his career representing plaintiffs in mass tort, wrongful death, and serious personal injury matters.

Jon focuses on helping his clients resolve their disputes and obtain compensation for their damages, finding creative solutions throughout the litigation process. In so doing, he has recovered millions of dollars for clients injured in trucking, automobile, bicycle, and motorcycle accidents. Jon is also a leading expert in representing individuals who have been harmed by fires. In addition to recovering hundreds of millions of dollars from utility companies in large wildfire cases, he has recovered millions of dollars on behalf of individual homeowners and tenants who have suffered damages as result of fires caused by negligent utility work, fires started on negligently maintained properties, and fires started in apartment complexes.

Jon has represented both plaintiffs and defendants in state and federal courts and has successfully tried cases in Utah and California. Notable representations include the following:

• Represented hundreds of the victims of the 2007 San Diego Wildfires who lost their homes and businesses in the fires, recovering over $134 million from San Diego Gas & Electric and other defendants on behalf of his clients and personally negotiating and/or mediating over 100 individual cases;
• Represented hundreds of the victims of the 2012 Wood Hollow Wildfire in Central Utah (which destroyed dozens of homes, recreational properties, agricultural businesses, and even killed one person), recovering over $26 million from Rocky Mountain Power on behalf of his clients;
• Represented a group of rural Utah cattle ranchers whose property was burned in the 2020 Canal Wildfire, recovering over $10 million in an arbitration award against Rocky Mountain Power notwithstanding RMP’s continual denial of liability throughout the litigation;
• Represented multiple tenants of the Silverado Apartments in downtown Salt Lake City, some of whom were burned and killed in the 2022 apartment fire, recovering a substantial amount on behalf of his clients above policy limits from the landlord and property managers;
• Represented Nu Skin Enterprises in a licensing dispute over technology used in Nu Skin’s BioPhotonic Scanner, obtaining a victory for Nu Skin at trial;
• Represented Costa Vida in a trade secret misappropriation case brought by Café Rio, concerning the two national fresh-Mex restaurant chains, ultimately reaching a favorable settlement for Costa Vida;
• Represented Wasatch Equality and a group of snowboarders seeking a permanent injunction against Alta Ski Resort and the United States Forest Service to overturn Alta’s no-snowboarding policy on Constitutional grounds under the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause, generating nationwide attention by raising novel Constitutional issues as a matter of first impression.

Prior to joining Parkinson Benson Potter in 2026, Jon practiced law for over 22 years with the Salt Lake City law firm, Parr Brown Gee & Loveless; before that, Jon practiced law for five years with a New York City-based law firm, LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & MacRae, and was a law clerk to Chief Judge Dee Benson of the United States District Court for the District of Utah. Jon was also an assistant adjunct professor at Brigham Young University’s J. Reuben Clark Law School, where he taught a course in debtor and creditor law for four years with former bankruptcy judge, Ralph Mabey.

Jon enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, and recreating in the outdoors. Jon is an avid surfer, snowboarder, yogi, hiker, and mountain biker, who considers himself fortunate to live in Salt Lake City, where he enjoys convenient access to the Wasatch Mountains.
